USA/Canada Trade War - New retaliatory tariffs effective tomorrow - Universal Logistics Trade Alerts - March 12, 2025

Toronto, March 12, 2025

In response to the Steel and Aluminum Tariffs which came into effect today in the U.S., the Government of Canada has issued another list of retaliatory tariffs against the United States (USA) which take effect March 13, 2025, at a rate of 25 per cent tariff on $29.8 billion in products imported from the USA.

“These tariffs only apply to goods originating from the U.S., which shall be considered as those goods eligible to be marked as a good of the U.S. in accordance with the Determination of Country of Origin for the Purpose of Marking Goods (CUSMA Countries) Regulations.

These countermeasures are effective as of 12:01 a.m. Eastern Standard Time (EST), March 13, 2025, and will remain in place until the U.S. eliminates its tariffs against Canadian steel and aluminum products.  Canada’s countermeasures do not apply to US goods that are in transit to Canada on the day on which they come into force.  Additional details on the administration of these tariffs are available on the Canada Border Services Agency website: Customs Notices (cbsa-asfc.gc.ca).

The list of products outlined at the tariff item level in the table below should be read in conjunction with the Schedule to Canada’s Customs Tariff.”

This list is in addition to the other 2 rounds of Retaliatory Tariffs:

$30 Billion list effective March 4, 2025

$125 Billion list coming into effect April 2, 2025
