The four founding members of the Ocean Alliance – CMA CGM, COSCO Container Lines, Evergreen Line and Orient Overseas Container Line (OOCL) – say their newly announced joint operations will make them the world’s largest shipping network. Operations are scheduled to begin April 1, 2017, with service provided by a fleet of nearly 350 vessels offering 3.5 million EU of capacity.
Container shipping analyst Alphaliner says the Ocean Alliance will have:
- slightly more capacity than the next largest container network, created by combining the operations of Maersk and Mediterranean Shipping Co..
- the largest share (39%) of the Asia – North America trade lane.
The Ocean Alliance will have nine Pacific Southwest services, four Pacific Northwest services, seven Asia – East Coast North America and U.S. Gulf services, six Asia – Europe services, five Asia – Mediterranean services, three Transatlantic services and two Asia – Red Sea services.
The Ocean Alliance will continue to work closely with all the authorities to ensure full compliance with applicable laws and regulations, and secure the necessary regulatory approvals to commence operations from April 1, 2017.
