Toronto, August 7, 2024
With the threat of a national rail strike looming, Canadian National (CN), Canadian Pacific Kansas City (CPKC) and the Teamsters Canada Rail Conference (TCRC) will resume negotiations on Wednesday, August 7th with the assistance of federal mediators, as per Labour Minister, Steven Mackinnon. This action comes after Mackinnon and Transport Minister, Pablo Rodriquez, met with CN, CPKC, and TCRC representatives on Monday, August 5th to try and prevent a strike, which could occur later this month.
Separate from the negotiations on a collective agreement, the Canada Industrial Relations Board (CIRB) is examining whether any critical shipments must continue in the event of job action. The response from the CIRB is expected by Friday, August 9th. No work stoppage can occur until either party files the required 72-hour notice after the CIRB issues its decision, subject to any extension of the cooling-off period that may be ordered by the CIRB.
