Canada Imposes Surtaxes on Steel, Aluminum, and Chinese EVs

Starting October 15, 2024, the Government of Canada will impose a 25% surtax on steel and aluminum imports from China. Additionally, there will be a 100% surtax on Chinese-made electric vehicles (EVs). These measures are intended to protect domestic industries and will apply to various products, including certain passenger automobiles, trucks, buses, and delivery vans.

The surtax on steel and aluminum imports will apply to goods listed in Annex 1, with detailed descriptions available in Canada’s Customs Tariff Schedule. Goods already in transit when the surtaxes take effect will be exempt. These measures will be reviewed within a year, and may be extended or expanded as needed.

In addition to the 100% surtax on EVs, the Most-Favoured Nation (MFN) tariff of 6.1% will continue to apply to these products. This surtax covers a broad range of vehicles, including hybrid and electric options, further demonstrating Canada’s commitment to regulating imports from China.
